Placement Targeting = placing ads on sites and/or URLS on the Google Adwords Content Network

There is no better way to describe what placement targeted ads are than to quote Google Adwords themselves:

"Placements are locations on the Google content network where your ad can appear. A placement can be an entire website, a subset of a website (such as a selection of pages from that site), or even an individual ad unit positioned on a single page. ... Managed placements are placements you choose to manage separately for increased control. You can increase or decrease your ad delivery by setting unique bids for each of your managed placements, or you can use managed placements to restrict the sites in the content network where your ads appear."

The general idea is instead of running a campaign based on keywords as you do in the Adwords Search ads, you place bids on domains, URL's or portions of web sites and Google places your ads on these pages.

As you can see from Google's quote above they dropped the word "managed" on us and that signifies that you must MANAGE which sites ads get placed on as opposed to the standard method of letting Google pick the sites your ads will be shown on.

HUGE >>> "Managed" placement trageting, especially on URL's equals more control and when you do things that require more effort, that means less of your competition will be "going the extra mile"! That often translates into fantastic opportunities! Placement Targeting is a fantastic opportunity to buy traffic for less and get SUPERIOR targeting. Yes - pay less and get your ads shown to more target driven traffic (if you do it right!)

How do you get CHEAP clicks and make money using placement targeting?

Adwords180 is the ebook the brought it all to the surface. Adwords 180 is OLD and out of date in some respects, but the dude Ian Rollinson has dropped the price to $14.95 and is offering it through PayPal.

Such a deal! I suggest you go grab Adwords180! It's a quick read, no videos or flashy distractions, but Adwords 180 has some good solid info that will lay the groundwork for you to understand what can be done with placement trageting URL's on the Content Network.

The main idea and concept is that Google would prefer that you let them place your ads on pages and do all the thinking and heavy lifting. In fact Google makes it harder to set specific URL's and Adwords 180 helps expose this secret tactic to go in and get ads placed on exact URLS instead of placement on sites or "subscetions" aka sub-directories. This is huge because you get to tailor make your ads based on page content as opposed to site wide guesses of what content will surround your ad.

Now this brings us to automation tools that help exploit this fantastic opportunity and we have a handful of them.

Site Sniper Pro, Content Bully, Placement Intelligence, Placement Locator, Adwords Digger and Adwords180 CPM Scanner are among the tools that might be worth looking into if this "placement targeting" opportunity appeals to you.

I wrote a review on Placement Intelligence which is worth checking out.

Site Sniper Pro is very cool but I had some problems with it related to Internet Explorer on my old XP PC and I have not yet installed it on my Vista PC - so I have not used that recently however I must say that Matt Harward, the guy behind it is one sharp guy and his video on this page is a MUST SEE if you want to get more info on Placement Targeting. Matt's bonus offer for Adwords180 is out of date I believe - but check out the video at the bottom - it really puts this whole placement targeting opprtunity in perspective as Matt tells us why this Adwords180 revealation is such a big deal.

I also have Content Bully, from the PPC Bully guys, (they raised the price). You can find details on Content Bully here. Content Bully is simple and elegant an dmissing some of the featires of the others, but so far I must say it is the most bug free of the apps.

A common problem when using placement targeting tools is that they pull up a lot of web pages and analyze them looking for adsense ads and quite often the pages will have malicious code on them. I've had problems with virus attacks and while I can't say for sure it is the applications that let them in, I do regularly see warnings from my vurus software telling me some weird shit is trying to do stuff on my pc. So - if you decide to use any of these tools - make sure you have real time virus protection. There are risks using the software (at least till these issues are fully addressed by the developers).

I haven't used Adwords Digger recently, but as I recall it was a cool little tool to find pages to put your Adwords ads on.

That's all for now! I hope you got a feeling for what you can do with placement targeting!
